HackerRank Announces CodePair, The First Tool That Empowers Interviewers To Accurately Evaluate Developers As They Code

CodePair transforms the hiring process for companies and lets developers demonstrate their programming chops in real time

Mountain View, Calif. – WEBWIRE

Mountain View, Calif. – February 6, 2014 – Today, HackerRank, the online social platform that lets developers code for fun, compete in challenges and flex their coding muscles, is unveiling the launch of CodePair, a new tool to revolutionize the entire process of technical interviews. CodePair eliminates the single most frustrating and critical aspect of developer interviews – assessment of coding prowess – by enabling the interviewer to present the developer with a coding challenge, and then actually observe them creating code to address it. In addition to this capability, CodePair streamlines hiring overall, with a simple new process that is at once collaborative, consistent, efficient, and easily measured and recorded.

CodePair is the latest innovation of HackerRank’s technical interviewing platform HackerRankX (formerly known as Interviewstreet), that combines all of the functionality needed for a technical interview into one package, eliminating the need for tedious and imprecise methods. Prior to CodePair, developers would be asked to write lines of code on paper or solve programming challenges as a proxy for programming ability. At the same time, developers would be forced to describe their code verbally during phone interviews, often enduring confusing instructions. Prior to today, interviewers had to rely solely on this broken interview process, as well as the antiquated resume, to determine skill level.

CodePair is transforming technical interviewing by providing:

  • Collaboration: Interviewers can collaboratively code with candidates, allowing them to watch the candidates solve pertinent problems and challenges in real-time.
  • Evaluation: CodePair’s built-in code-checker lets interviewers easily evaluate code during the phone interview, instantly illustrating the precision and efficiency of the code written.
  • Consistency: Candidates can be measured across the same rubric, allowing companies to create programming challenges that can be shared across teams and reused.
  • Reporting: CodePair provides a step-by-step view of the interview process that can later be replayed, which helps gauge the candidates’ thought process during an interview. With the reports and data on candidates in the system, CodePair helps a company understand the efficiency of their hiring cycle, the efficacy of their questions, and ultimately, allows them to identify the best programmers.

“With CodePair, we were able to create a new experience that is far more accurate and powerful than the standard ‘whiteboard interview,’” said Vivek Ravisankar, co-founder of HackerRank. “Our community of developers on HackerRank is incredibly vibrant, and pointed out early on that many of the tools we were building for our challenges could be used in the context of technical recruiting. With their support, we set out to improve a broken system and offer a way for talented developers to truly shine for companies.”
