Avateq’s SFN Drift Monitoring helps make Mobile Digital Broadcasting more feasible
Markham, ON - November 26, 2013 -- Avateq announces new SFN (single frequency network) drift monitoring for broadcasters, helping to strengthen the network on which mobile digital television is transmitted to smartphones and tablets.
SFN Drift Monitoring is being added to Avateq’s AVQ1020 (ActiveCore Radio Frequency Layer Monitoring Receiver and Signal Analyzer). SFN technology ensures proper synchronization of signals from multiple transmitters as well as transmitters emitting mobile DTV signals in accordance with specifications for mobile digital broadcasting. Seamless synchronization is critical for an uninterrupted signal as a user moves from the coverage area of one transmitter to the coverage area of another.

Mobile digital television (DTV) is already live in several parts of the United States and across Europe. It allows viewers to watch live, local and national programming over the air on portable devices without expensive cell phone data plans. Available receivers for most popular mobile platform (iPods, iPads, Android-based devices) make mobile DTV an affordable media platform.
For broadcasters, the success of mobile DTV relies on a robust signal across the whole network. This is achieved by organizing transmitters into a Single Frequency Network (SFN), where they simultaneously emit the same signal carrying the same data at the same frequency. The aim of SFN is efficient usage of the frequency spectrum, allowing a greater number of services (TV programs) in comparison to traditional Multi-Frequency Networks.
Factors that affect SFN and influence overall network performance are:
- frequency offsets
- timing differentials between transmitters
The amplitude differential across the signal coverage area must be verified during SFN tuning. Once set, the transmission frequency and timing should be monitored at every transmitter on the network.
The latest version of the AVQ1020 receiver and signal analyzer, now with SFN drift monitoring, addresses the challenge of 24/7 day-by-day monitoring and supports major digital broadcasting standards – DVB-T/H/T2, DAB/DAB+/T-DMB, ISDB-T/Tb, DTMB, ATSC-M/H, etc. AVQ1020 firmware detects and measures the transmitted signal frequency offset and the signal time alignment variations relative to GPS reference time pulse. SFN drift is presented by plotting the signal timing variation vs time.
AVQ1020 allows an operator to monitor remote transmitting sites through a web interface or as a part of SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol )-based network management system. The analyzer features an easy to use and highly customizable alarm system with user-defined thresholds and assigned severity levels.
The internal-logging server records events and measured parameters history for archiving and future analysis.
