Seeking new technology to reduce cardiovascular disease and stroke

The American Heart Association announced today the launch of its first New York City Open Innovation Challenge, a crowdsourced, judged competition to uncover new innovative tools to lower the risk of heart disease and stroke. The top three finalists receive grants totaling $25,000, and a chance to meet, mingle and present at the American Heart Association’s Health Sciences Innovation • Investment Forum  in New York City, March 6, 2014. Each award winner will be featured on healthcare crowdfunding platform MedStartr.

Early stage health technology companies or teams with novel ideas that seek to help patients, providers or medical facilities meet the aims of the American Heart Association’s 2020 Impact Goal—to improve the cardiovascular health of all Americans by 20 percent while reducing death from cardiovascular diseases and stroke by 20 percent by the year 2020—are encouraged to apply.

Entries from dedicated entrepreneurs, scientists, thoughtful physicians, innovative nurses, empowered patients, inventive engineers, activated administrators and passionate people from all fields are welcome to enter. Teams must have a New York City presence and be available to come to New York City for the Health Sciences Innovation • Investment Forum on March 6, 2014.

Cheryl Pegus, MD, MPH of the American Heart Association said, “This new challenge drives home our commitment to support new technology and innovative research that can lead to lifesaving tools and information to prevent and treat these diseases. We invite healthcare technology innovators everywhere to be a part of this important competition.”

The Open Innovation Challenge is part of the full day Health Sciences Innovation • Investment Forum, a world-class collaborative discussion bringing together some of the great area minds from industry, investment and academia. Through this Forum the American Heart Association will foster relationships between key parties that will benefit the entire health sciences ecosystem and drive much needed resources towards innovation in cardiovascular research and technology.
