ISHM Members Part of the US Technical Advisory Group for New ISO Global Occupational Health and Safety Standard Effort
The Institute for Safety and Health Management’s (ISHM) leadership provides valuable insight for new OH&S ISO standard development.
The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) recently announced that it will develop a new standard for global occupational health and safety (OH&S) with the goal of providing governmental agencies, industry and other affected stakeholders with effective, usable guidance for improving worker safety in countries around the world. The work will be overseen by ISO Project Committee (PC) 283, Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems – Requirements.
The Institute for Safety and Health Management is pleased to announce that they will be represented on the US Technical Advisory Group (TAG) for the development of the new ISO standard. Both Tom Slavin and Larry Curtis from ISHM will be providing their vital input gained from decades of experience in the OH&S profession.
“This will be a critically important standard for safety and health, and the U.S. needs to have a strong, active and engaged role in this activity,” said Tom Slavin, ISHM board member. Larry Curtis, ISHM’s Executive Director, added, “This proposed occupational health and safety standard can significantly and positively impact occupational health and safety management on a global level.”
The American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE) is heading up the U.S. work effort by serving as the U.S. TAG administrator to ISO PC 283. The U.S. TAG to ISO PC 283 will advise ANSI on voting positions relevant to the proposed OH&S management standard, and will carry out detailed discussions on issues related to its development. As the U.S. member body to ISO, ANSI accredits U.S. TAGs to develop and transmit U.S. positions on ISO technical activities.
The ISHM administers the internationally recognized Certified Safety and Health Manager (CSHM) certification and the Associate Safety and Health Manager (ASHM) and Certified Safety Management Practitioner (CSMP) programs for safety professionals and safety managers.
