Earlier this month, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced the recall of approximately 1,850 youth beds that were sold nationwide at furniture and retail stores.  According to the CPSC release, the surface paint on the pink-colored youth beds contains levels of lead that exceed the limits allowed by law.  The youth beds were sold from February 2012 through June of this year.

The CPSC release states, “This recall involves pink-colored twin-size, metal beds with three pink heart-shaped designs on both the footboard and headboard. The beds come with an assortment of stickers that can be applied to the heart shape design. The model number for the pink beds is #MB-YPT-R1 and can be found on the box and the instruction sheet that came with the bed.  The manufacture date code is located on a yellow label affixed to the inside of the metal side rail and appears as MFG: year/month/day: “MFG: 2013/01/25.”  The recalled beds were manufactured between December 2011 and May 2013.” The beds were manufactured in China.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), there are approximately 4 million households that have children in them that are being exposed to lead.  “Lead poisoning is entirely preventable if children are kept away from contact with materials that contain the toxic metal,” reported Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President, Marketing at EMSL Analytical, Inc., a leading lead and material testing laboratory.  “Lead-based paints and lead contaminated dust are the main sources of exposure for children in the U.S.  EMSL offers lead and material testing services to help manufacturers, importers and retailers identify problems such as what occurred with the imported beds.  Catching these types of problems early can prevent costly recalls, bad publicity and even expensive litigation,” he continued.

EMSL’s laboratory is supported by Ph.D. scientists and a broad array of instrumentation that can apply a full spectrum of standard and customized analyses including elemental and chemical, structural, particle, surface, contaminant, mechanical, failure and bio-effectiveness to projects.
