MELVILLE, N.Y. – Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, is proud to announce that the five-member teams of students from Sachem High School and Chaminade High School are winners of the 2013 Long Island Envirothon. The winning teams were announced on Tuesday, April 30, 2013, following the completion of this year’s LI Envirothon at Old Bethpage Village Restoration in Old Bethpage, N.Y.

The Long Island Envirothon is part of the North American Envirothon competition, which is sponsored by Canon U.S.A. and is one of North America’s largest environmental education competitions. Participating students learn about their natural surroundings as well as environmental conservation and sustainable development. Both the Nassau and Suffolk County Soil & Water Conservation Districts coordinate the Long Island Envirothon in collaboration with the United States Department of Agriculture, Natural Resources Conservation Service and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation.

“We are very proud of all the participating students in this year’s Envirothon,” said Bunji Yano, senior director and general manager, Corporate Communications Division, Canon U.S.A. “All of us at Canon would like to congratulate the two winning teams and wish them the best of luck at the state competition this May.”

This year’s competition was focused on “Sustainable Rangeland Management.” Over 30 teams rotated between subject stations and answered in-depth questions pertaining to the topic. Funded by the event’s sponsors, the students of the two top-scoring teams, one from Nassau County and one from Suffolk County, each received a $500 scholarship, and paid registration and transportation to compete in the New York State Envirothon held on May 30-31, 2013 at Morrisville State College in Morrisville, N.Y.
