LA GRANDE, OR. – When an IRS letter lands in the mailbox, it can become a panic-moment. The first thing to check is whether or not your tax preparer guarantees their work. Whether you’ve just received an IRS letter, or you’re looking to prevent that from happening, local tax expert, Stuart Martin, shares a warning.

“Over and over we hear about taxpayers getting an IRS letter, and not knowing how to make the next move. What’s awful is when we hear of things like their tax preparer wouldn’t help them resolve the matter. Other situations involve the tax preparer charging their client to resolve the issue, even though it was the tax professional’s mistake. Lastly, and possibly the worst case, is when the taxpayer tries to handle the IRS letter alone. Not only is that a huge hassle, it can become a living nightmare,” Martin said. 
      
To prevent this from happening, it’s possible to get a guarantee in writing from a tax professional, saying you won’t be stuck to manage the IRS on your own, should an audit arise.  Not only that, but look for a tax professional that offers other things of value to their clients as well.

“Some things to look for in a tax professional are guarantees on tax return accuracy. You should also find someone who promises completion of your return in a reasonable time frame, who will get you the most money back possible, within the law, and who will protect you on an ongoing basis from an IRS audit. They should cover you even years after you file,” Martin recommended.
