Casio Introduces a Fostering Education Series to Empower Teachers and Encourage Understanding among Students

Fostering Mathematical Thinking Enables Students to Make Sense of Mathematics through Exploration and the Integration of Appropriate Classroom Tools

DOVER, NJ, - - As the original developer of the graphing calculator, Casio understands education is most meaningful when it involves the student, promotes abstract and quantitative reasoning skills and appeals to innate human curiosity. With this understanding, Casio, in conjunction with Clemson University – Casio’s Center of Academic Training – developed the Fostering Education Series, a collection of research-based books and education workbooks designed to empower educators and help foster a positive student-centered learning environment for math and science instruction through the use of appropriate tools.

“Our focus, at Casio, is to develop programs and ground-breaking technologies that enable teachers and students to attack STEM-driven curriculum from multiple fronts,” said Andy Zweig, general manager of Casio’s Consumer Products Division. “The Fostering Education series is dedicated to helping teachers convey the principles of mathematics by engaging students in explorations that delve into complex ideas and encourage critical thinking.”

The Fostering Education with Casio Series, specifically Fostering Mathematical Thinking, integrates the new Common Core Standards for State Mathematics into the classroom and ultimately helps prepare students for the future. Designed to enrich the mathematics classroom, the series integrates Casio’s technology into the classroom to enhance dynamics, encourage discovery-based learning and analytical thought.

“The need to integrate education with the effective use of technology is in the spotlight currently,” said Zweig. “The Transforming Education Through Technology Act was recently introduced to legislature and is focused on ensuring that students and educators have access to a learning environment enriched with technology in order to prepare students for a successful future.”

“To build a deeper understanding of mathematics, the series has students begin with contexts that allow them to connect what they are studying to their prior knowledge and experience,” said Bob Horton, professor, mathematics education at Clemson University. “It also provides tips for teachers as they guide their students to this deep understanding of critical concepts. These tips point out areas in which students may struggle, make suggestions for a variety of approaches and representations, and discuss some of the connections both within and outside of mathematics that will help students learn and retain.”

In addition to the Fostering Series, Casio offers a variety of substantial resources on its website for educators including high-quality state and nationally correlated teacher-written activities and investigations. The website also offers sample excerpts from Casio’s Fostering Education Series and accompanying workbooks, calculator quick-start guides and practice questions from various state exams for preparation purposes.
