Argo the movie, directed by and starring Ben Affleck in the lead role as a CIA operative, recently won the Academy Award for Best Picture in 2012.

Based on real events, the dramatic thriller depicts the life-threatening covert operation to rescue six Americans from Tehran which unfolded behind the scenes of the Iranian hostage crisis of 1979. Argo the movie is a film based on the little-known role that the CIA and Hollywood actually played in successfully returning these US Embassy employees home. The operation itself was at the time naturally highly-classified, but since it’s declassification only years later, the opportunity to tell the story was there to be taken.

It has now been taken by Affleck, and taken well according to critics, notwithstanding some criticism as to the historical accuracy of some details.

As one reviewer, Paul Allaer from Cincinatti documents, the film is ’based on true events, but fictionalized for Hollywood purposes, of how CIA operative Tony Mendez (played by Affleck) goes to Iran to help rescue six Americans who had escaped to the nearby Canadian Ambassador’s residence in across-town Tehran, as Iranian fanatics violently took over the US Embassy compound.’

In essence, his Argo review notes that ’first and foremost, this is a terrific, tense and rousing historical drama, the likes of which we don’t get to see often enough anymore these days. In fact, the whole movie experience feels like the movie was made in the late 70s…the movie is a tour-de-force for Affleck, who stars, produces and directs…it seems that he is either incredibly lucky, or simply getting better and better with each movie (after 2007’s Gone Baby Gone and 2010’s The Town)…this is truly Hollywood at its very best: a smart, tense, engaging, even at times funny drama/thriller, proving once again that you don’t need to have the world blown up into smithereens to engage an appreciative audience…highly recommended.’

In another Argo review, K. Gordon, summarizes well when he muses that ’…the story itself is a doozey, and definitely fits into the you’d-never-believe-it-if-it-weren’t-true mold. Using a fake movie as a cover-up for a long-shot rescue operation sounds like a bad episode of Mission Impossible (or Get Smart). But here it is, a part of history.’

Overall, Argo has been a striking box office success, critically acclaimed to the point of winning its recent Oscar, so it is no surprise that the vast majority of movie reviewers have responded positively to the film, with around 81% of all reviews giving it a four or five star rating.
