DownUnder GeoSolutions Selects SGI to Advance Exploration and Production for the Oil and Gas Industry

WEBWIRE

Perth, Australia. — SGI (NASDAQ: SGI), the trusted leader in technical computing, today announced that DownUnder GeoSolutions has selected SGI to provide upgraded high performance computing (HPC) infrastructure to accelerate results for its customers in the global oil and gas industry.

DownUnder GeoSolutions is a Perth-based service provider to the oil and gas industry. While being a 100 percent Australian-owned company, it is a truly global enterprise with offices in Perth, Brisbane, Kuala Lumpur, Jakarta, Singapore, London and Houston. SGI has been providing HPC resources to DownUnder GeoSolutions from its inception in December 2003, and the company has been expanding its operations and footprint substantially since then. DownUnder GeoSolutions is now a recognised leader globally in geosciences services. Its portfolio includes a software suite for data interpretation and analysis, along with a range of professional services.

“Our business relies on being able to process significant amounts of our client’s data, fast,” said Matt Lamont, Managing Director of DownUnder GeoSolutions. “The new SGI server technology considerably increases our memory capacity as well as increases the efficiency of our algorithms. Our processing speed is as much as 30 percent faster.”

DownUnder GeoSolutions assists its clients to vastly improve investments and operations. By using unique software tools and algorithms, DownUnder GeoSolutions improves interpretation of clients’ data resulting in more accurate drilling. DownUnder GeoSolutions applies an integrated services and software approach across seismic data processing, depth imaging, and quantitative interpretation services that include modelling, rock physics, various inversion approaches and algorithms and probabilistic lithology and fluid prediction.

The current SGI configuration across DownUnder GeoSolutions’ data centres produces approximately 330 teraflops of compute power. SGI® Rackable® servers with tens of thousands of processor cores are deployed, making it equivalent in power to some of the biggest supercomputers in the world. Servers are running the latest Intel® Xeon® processor E5 family or the AMD Opteron® 6200 Series processor. Massive data storage capability can support five petabytes of online storage.

The new SGI server technology has reduced floor space requirements in the data center by delivering greater data processing and storage density. Further, DownUnder GeoSolution’s CPU-intensive code runs 20-30 percent more efficiently. Energy use of the upgraded servers from SGI is also 10 percent lower and the total cost of ownership of this infrastructure over a three-year period expected to be 25 percent less than the previous server infrastructure.

“This is another example of SGI’s expertise in solving challenges in the oil and gas industry. SGI provides the speed and scale necessary to support our customers who leverage massive data analysis and Big Data to optimize investments and operations,” said Bill Mannel, vice president of Product Marketing, SGI.
