Workers must focus on reducing the blurred line between work and their personal lives related to checking email outside of hours to achieve work life balance in 2013.

Work life balance expert, Mandy Brasser said that many workers are continually sabotaging their own personal time by using mobile devices for work related purposes more frequently in 2012.

“It has become common place to have your work emails on your phone and tablets these days, which makes it incredibly hard for employees to improve their ability to maintain a healthy work life balance,” said Ms Brasser.

“Employees need to have discipline when work can be accessible at all hours if they want to improve this in 2013”.

“It’s often times not the expectation of an employer that someone is checking their email that frequently, but unfortunately it is a growing habit, that can become like an addiction that is hard to stop,” said Ms Brasser.

According to a study conducted on a US and European based company, Mozy, of it’s 1,000, 20% of its employees have already checked their work emails before 7.00am.

“There are definitely some positives about checking your work email before getting to work, but staff need to be careful that it doesn’t get out of control,” said Ms Brasser.

Ms Brasser said workers need to address the following areas in 2013:

  1. Stop checking your email first and last moments of the day
  2. Speak with your Manager and set clear expectations regarding accessing emails outside of hours
  3. Don’t check your work emails on the weekends
  4. Put the mobile devices down and connect with your loved ones
