CH2M HILL Cements Tunneling Expertise with Six Awards

CH2M HILL, a global full-service consulting, design, construction, and operations firm, has received six global tunneling awards at the 2012 New Civil Engineer Tunneling Awards in Toronto. These recognitions build on the tunneling team’s success at the 2011 awards in Hong Kong and the 2010 awards in London.

-Tunneling Contractor of the Year Award for the Northern Sewerage Project in Melbourne: An AUD$515 million, 12.5 kilometer extension to Melbourne’s existing sewerage system including design of 14 shafts and 2.3 kilometers of tunnels.
-Product / Equipment Innovation of the Year Award for the Bond Street Station Upgrade—Senceive Running Tunnel Monitoring System in London: Designers for a system to monitor the grouting of holes around a running tunnel suffering ongoing deformation due to seepage of sand into the tunnel.
-Tunneling Project of the Year Award for Projects Between USD$100M and $1B for the Queens Bored Tunnels East Side Access Project in New York City: Part of the multi-billion dollar Eastside Access project linking Long Island railroad into Grand Central Terminal and including four new tunnels constructed beneath existing railroad infrastructure.
-Tunneling Project of the Year Award for Projects Less than $100M and Shortlisted for the Technical Innovation of the Year Award for the Tottenham Court Road Station Upgrade in London: This £250-million upgrade of one of the busiest stations in the London Underground network involves the five-fold enlargement of the ticket hall and improved access to platforms, including emergency escape and step-free access.
-Safety Initiative of the Year in recognition for design on the National Grid Power Tunnels project in London, that will install high voltage transmission cables within 32 kilometers of tunnels interconnected with shafts across London. Health and safety aims on the project include performance beyond legislative requirements, achievement of zero worksite injuries, and the establishment of an ethos that all accidents are preventable.
-Environmental Initiative of the Year in recognition for work on the Western Regional Conveyance Tunnel, a 10-kilometer sewage transport tunnel in northern Kentucky. The 3.7-meter diameter tunnel was bored through gas-bearing shale deposits at a depth of 90 meters. Environmental measures saved up to USD$20 million in delay and third-party costs.

The firm was also shortlisted for the Technical Innovation of the Year Award for the Thames Water Lee Tunnel Project in London.
