UGI Partners with Parkland High School for Energy Efficiency and Savings

WEBWIRE – Tuesday, December 11, 2012

Reading, PA – UGI Utilities, Inc., joined representatives of Parkland High School today and congratulated the school on its conversion from fuel oil to natural gas to heat its facility. Parkland’s conversion will save the school district and its taxpayers more than $350,000 per year.

“This is a project with a long history, and we at UGI are pleased to complete it,” said Robert Stoyko, Vice president of Customer Relations at UGI. “Thanks in part to the extension of natural gas to GEO Specialty Chemicals (GEO) in late 2012, the possibility of Parkland experiencing the savings, reliability and efficiency natural gas has to offer has become a reality.”

Original discussions with Parkland School District to extend service to the high school began nearly a decade ago. However, UGI gas mains were too far from the school to make the conversion economically viable. With the extension to GEO’s facility, service to Parkland High School became economically feasible.

Construction of the Parkland natural gas line commenced on July 7, 2012 and was completed on August 28, 2012, in time for the start of the 2012/13 school year. The project involved installation of 5,200 feet of 8-inch gas main and a large investment of UGI manpower and equipment to ensure early completion.

“We are pleased to have this infrastructure in place for Parkland especially now, as the cost of natural gas is approximately 40 percent lower than it was four years ago,” explained Stoyko. “On behalf of UGI Utilities, we’d like to offer our gratitude to all of those involved in this project from start to finish, including those who made this extension possible, especially Parkland School District and GEO Specialty Chemicals.”

UGI’s Gas Division has headquarters in Reading, Pennsylvania and serves more than 348,000 customers in 15 southeastern Pennsylvania counties, including customers in and around Allentown, Bethlehem, Easton, Hazleton, Harrisburg, Lancaster and Reading.
