Adelaide vs Fremantle
WHERE AND WHEN: AAMI Stadium, Friday September 14, 8.15pm
LAST TIME: Adelaide 17.17 (119) defeated Fremantle 14.7 (91), round 20 2012 at AAMI Stadium
It’s now or never for Adelaide. Its hard work during the regular season earned it a second chance, while Fremantle proved to the entire football world it can’t be discounted with an emphatic win over Geelong in Melbourne. The Crows were down last week, Fremantle up, so how will this enthralling contest unfold? With no ‘next week’ for the loser, neither side will leave anything on AAMI Stadium.
1. Adelaide’s had the wood on Fremantle this season. The Crows travelled west in round 10 and, despite the home side hitting the lead early in the final quarter, the Crows rallied and ran away with a 29-point win. In Adelaide in round 20, it was a similar situation. It was basically neck-and-neck at half-time, but the Crows again flexed their muscle and kicked away to a 28-point win. There’s more on the line this time around; will the result stay the same?
Kurt Tippett looked disinterested last weekend against the Swans and one South Australian great in Warren Tredrea has called for him to be dropped in favour of Josh Jenkins, who booted eight goals in the SANFL. Tredrea said Tippett seemed more concerned about his contract than playing good finals football. Ironically, if Tippett does want to move on from West Lakes, good, committed finals football will be the factor that could add an extra "0" to his contract. He’s capable of dominating defences and the Crows need him to fire on Friday night.
1. Defence is clearly the base on which Ross Lyon’s game-plan is built, but Fremantle’s scoring power in recent weeks has been powerful. Against Geelong, Freo kicked its second highest half-time score this season – 8.9 (57) – and two weeks earlier against North Melbourne it booted its equal highest score for the season, 20.12 (132). Pavlich, Hayden Ballantyne and Michael Walters have combined for 32 goals in the last four games, giving the Freo forward line a dangerous edge that is becoming hard to contain.
Adelaide has kicked 17 goals in each of its two wins over Fremantle this season, so restricting the Crows will be the primary focus on Friday night. The Sydney Swans kept Adelaide to 5.12 (42) in the second qualifying final, and Lyon said he would "go to school" on the Swans approach this week. Fremantle’s ability to pressure the ball carrier and force rushed kicks and turnovers was a key against Geelong and the Crows can expect a similar physical onslaught.
