Hurricane Isaac Flood Warnings

EMSL Analytical has developed a “Do-It-Yourself Mold Kit” to help detect mold in homes after a flood.

According to the Examiner, Hurricane Isaac is expected to hit the United States’ southern coast close to New Orleans between Gulf Port, MS and Morgan City, LA after midnight on Tuesday night into Wednesday morning.

Currently, Isaac is classified as a Category 1 hurricane with wind speeds reaching 90 mph in the center. However, the hurricane is traveling west, giving it more time to develop over warm water. A new concern is that the hurricane will develop into a Category 2 with winds reaching 100 mph by the time it reaches land.

Flooding Alerts:

Southeastern Louisiana, southern Mississippi, southern Alabama, and the western Florida Panhandle are expected to have total rainfall amounts ranging from 6 to 14 inches with isolated amounts that could reach up to 20 inches. Even more than wind, flooding is a major threat--especially in New Orleans.

With flooding alerts being so great, mold poses a significant threat to home owners in the area. Having active mold growth in your home may cause health problems for infants, the elderly, or those with a weak immune system. Serious side effects include asthma, lung infection, or inflammation of the lungs.

“After flooding occurs, it is important to take precautions and try to minimize mold growth in your home,” states Diane Miskowski, MPH, Business Development Manager at EMSL Analytical. “If mold growth is suspected, residents may want their home professionally tested and need to take samples using tools such as EMSL’s quick and affordable ‘Do-It-Yourself Mold Kit.’”
