Toddler Speaks on Sikh Temple Shootings

In an effort to heal her family after the Sikh Temple Shootings in Oak Creek, WI, Lina Trivedi recorded a conversation she had with her 2-year-old daughter Nikhita about the tragedy. The goal was to find a way to help the community heal.

WEBWIRE

In the recorded conversation, Nikhita called for members of the community of all cultures and races to send their pictures in front of the Sikh Temple of Wisconsin in Oak Creek (or any other Sikh temple).  The plan is to organize pictures on a Web site and a printed book.  The effort is expected to demonstrate solidarity of the community at large in a stance against hate and violence.

Interested participants in the project are encouraged to photograph themselves in a creative and expressive manner in front of any Sikh temple.  Also, participants can send up to 100 words conveying any message they would like to express to the community at large about the tragedy.  Pictures can be submitted on the Web at: FacesOfSikhism.com

Although only two years old, Nikhita is very expressive and aware that a tragic event occurred at the temple.  Lina speaks very openly to her about the events and as a result, her comments were very candid and genuine.  The video can be seen at: http://www.FacesOfSikhism.com/support-our-project/

Lina was unsure where the recorded conversation was going to lead.  “I thought maybe we would end up holding a community event of some sort, or creating some sort of community artwork.  Nikhita’s first idea was to take Elmo and other toys to the temple to make people happy.”  Eventually the discussion shaped into an effort to request people of all races and faith to take pictures of themselves in front of the temple and send them through the site with any thoughts they want to express about the tragedy that occurred Sunday, August 5, 2012.

The Web site project is currently under construction, and funds are being raised over the next 30 days to execute the print book project.  Symbolically, the fundraising efforts are concluding on 9-11.  The first donation was made in Nikhita Steward-Trivedi’s name.  A two-year-old guiding our nation to heal is inspiring and offers confidence in the loving nature of our world.
