In 2003, the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act was passed to defer certain civil obligations and lighten the financial stress of the spouses and family of deployed soldiers. SCRA aids military families with liabilities, such as credit card debt and taxes.

In the event a military couple wants to divorce, the legal process is much like a civilian divorce. The Service Member Family Protection Act was approved to help military couples impartially devise a child custody plan and remove the possibility of the service member being denied custody due to previous deployments.
