Canada’s Largest Home Resides in Oakville, Ontario

Oakville, Ontario known for its beautiful luxury real estate, gorgeous waterfront, small town feel and close proximity to the GTA, can now add another notch to its ever growing belt: Home to Canada’s largest dwelling. 

According to the Globe and Mail, Chelster Hall on the shores of Lake Ontario may very well be the largest home in the country.  The luxury estate was built and owned by Hugo Powell who is the former President of Labatt’s brewing company and former CEO of Interbrew. 

At 47,000 square feet, the home took several years to complete and it involved being very meticulous to every detail of the massive estate. Mr. Powell recalled that it took three tries to get the spherical ceiling right in the entrance hall. “Three times it wasn’t right and they had to redo it”.  The home also features a two-story library containing over 3,000 books with a spiral staircase connecting the 2 floors.

The idea for the home was to make it look timeless. Mr. Powell wanted the home to look old when it was built and look the same a century from now. The thought put into this home was not only for himself and his family, but for future occupants of the home as well. 

Since Mr. Powell realized that this home has peaked a lot of interest from Oakville residents he has placed 2 plaques outside the gates of the estate. One plaque explains that the home was named after his two golden retrievers (Lady Chelsea and Manchester) and the other explaining that the chapel on the property is named after St. Francis of Assisi who was the patron saint of animals.

Mr. Powell is well known in Oakville and surrounding areas as being a generous philanthropist and animal lover.

Although, Chelster Hall is the largest home in the Oakville area and likely all of Canada, it is one of many beautiful luxury homes in Oakville and surrounding areas.  With great waterfront properties to breathtaking properties in Glen Abbey and North Oakville, the city has long been seen as a hot bed for luxury real estate.
