1 Million Recalled Birth Control Packets May Not Prevent Pregnancy

Pfizer said that it was recalling approximately one million packets of birth control pills in the United States, because they may not contain the correct doses of contraceptive drugs. This packaging error could result in unintended pregnancies.

Birth control packets have 21 active pills to provide conception and 7 inactive ones to regulate the menstrual cycle. Pfizer discovered that some packets contained too many active tablets, while others did not have enough.

The pharmaceutical company reported that mechanical and visual inspection failures on the packaging line caused the problem, but they have since been corrected.
