Why Investors and DIY Super. Funds are their Own Worst Enemy

While many investors have lost money in volatile share markets, they will continue to repeat their mistakes and use the same losing strategy in 2012.

Stock market expert, David Hunt, CEO and analyst for the Profit Hunter Group said many investors who have lost money are hurt and disillusioned, and bring this poor attitude with them into future investments, which is a big mistake.

“Unfortunately, their next step is often repeating that very same losing strategy, thereby racking up even bigger losses,” Said Mr Hunt.

“There are many people who’ve chosen to self manage their capital and superannuation, and bring their emotions into investment decisions all the time,” he said.

“Investors become their own worst enemy and as the stakes get higher, the stress increases and more bad decisions are made.”

Mr Hunt said investors and DIY superannuation fund managers needed to consider three key components when investing in 2012:

  1. Determine the exact price levels for entry of a share purchase – when and at what price do I buy
  2. Determine the risk management price – if I’m wrong, where do I sell or exit
  3. Determine the potential profit target – Is the expected gain more than three times greater than initial amount of money at risk

Mr Hunt said many investors didn’t consider these factors at all, but simply went for blue chip investments, or on a tip from a friend.

“More and more people are choosing to manage their own portfolios (investors, DIY superannuation funds and also traders) without the necessary knowledge or ability to make a decision that’s not based on emotion.”

Mr Hunt runs the Profit Hunter Group where he defines these three key components for his members, no matter which share, commodity, forex market or international index they wish to invest in. You can often see him live on the skyNews program
