South Central Region Truck Club Turns Commercial Conference into Texas Wildfire Fundraiser

WEBWIRE

As the entire country watches the massive destruction that the Bastrop wildfires continue to inflict on the community, the South Central Region Truck Club has decided to spring into action, using the scheduled GM Commercial Conference as a sort of fundraising headquarters.  The devastating 34,000 acre wildfire, combined with dozens of other major wildfires has wreaked disaster for thousands of residents and is still only partially contained.  So far, over 1,550 homes have been completely destroyed and over 2000 firefighters are working around the clock in an effort to contain it.  Fueled by high winds and historically dry conditions, many residents evacuated with just the clothes on their backs.  Dozens of subdivisions still remain closed as search crews sift through the charred rubble looking for victims and assessing the damage.  “I think everyone wants to help in one way or another,” explains Ken Thompson, Secretary/Treasurer of the South Central Truck Club.  “When you combine efforts as a group, you can get a lot done in a short period of time, so we thought we’d use the upcoming conference as a way to organize the effort and make the most difference. ”

The South Central Region Truck Club is asking that everyone of the anticipated 150 attendees coming to next week’s Commercial Conference in Arlington, TX to bring donation items, such as clothing, toiletries, etc, and if possible, financial assistance.  The Truck Club will coordinate the collection of donated items in the parking lot of the Sheraton Hotel on September 20th and 21st.  Box trucks will be available for collection of the items and financial assistance.  “When one is full, we’ll bring in another and another,” said Mr. Thompson.  All of the donations will be delivered directly to the Red Cross Bastrop Chapter who will distribute the money and goods to those in need.

If the preliminary buzz about the collection drive is any indication, Mr. Thompson expects it to be a tremendous success.  “We’ve already had several dealers make large cash donations well into the thousands and our vendors have been stepping up to the plate, eager to participate. If everyone pitches in, I am sure we can help many families who have lost so much. ”

Donations will be received throughout the day in the parking lot of the Sheraton Hotel at the Arlington Convention Center, 1200 Ballpark Way, Arlington, Texas.  Checks should be made out directly to The Red Cross.
