NAVTEQ Natural Guidance™: Over 120 European Cities already covered - today launching in Russia

Moscow, Russia - NAVTEQ, the leading global provider of maps, traffic and location data enabling navigation, location-based services and mobile advertising around the world, has expanded coverage of the innovative NAVTEQ Natural Guidance to over 120 cities across Europe and is now also covering four cities in Russia (Moscow, St Petersburg, Ekaterinburg and Rostov-na-Donu).

Asking other people for directions and navigating by recognisable orientation points is the oldest and most intuitive method of finding the way. NAVTEQ Natural Guidance breaks new ground by enabling navigation systems to give directions using the same descriptive cues: for example, ‘turn left after the red building’.

Turning the traditional man-machine interface on its head and bringing a ‘human touch’ to navigation, NAVTEQ Natural Guidance makes it easier for drivers to process information quickly before the next manœuvre. It addresses the fundamental need for simpler directions which allow the driver to remain confidently focused on the road ahead – without the need to look for street signs, judge distances or estimate where to make the next turn.

“NAVTEQ Natural Guidance allows navigation to evolve beyond the linear, time and distance based instructions of today and revolutionise the way people interact with maps,” commented Frank Pauli, Vice President, Map & Content Products, EMEA. “It enables navigation devices to guide consumers the way humans instruct each other - by using recognisable and easily understandable points of reference like the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg, for example.”

NAVTEQ has data collection experts based all over the world and their local knowledge is crucial in identifying what is important and relevant to consumers in each city and how people in different cultures select points of reference. Visual cues vary enormously and include locations such as churches, stations, supermarkets, petrol stations, banks, landmarks and easily recognisable buildings.

Other criteria consider how visibility is affected by direction of travel; seasonal variations; and the relative distance between the cue and the location for the manœuvre. NAVTEQ also produces complementary phonetic voice data (NAVTEQ Voice for Natural Guidance™) to enable these intuitive instructions to be rendered into the appropriate languages.

NAVTEQ Natural Guidance is currently available for cities in Benelux, France, Germany, Italy, Russia, Spain and the UK plus locations in North America and Asia Pacific. Expansion plans for all regions remain aggressive for the remainder of this year and beyond.
