Combat-blinded Veterans gather to learn from one another

RANCHO CORDOVA, Calif.,- Health Net Federal Services, LLC, part of the Government Contracts segment of Health Net, Inc. (NYSE:HNT), and MHN (Managed Health Network, Inc.), Health Net’s behavioral health subsidiary, announced today its sponsorship of Operation Peer Support (OPS) at the Blinded Veterans Association’s (BVA) 66th National Convention in Las Vegas, Nev., to be held August 16-20, 2011. More than 180 blinded service members and Veterans are expected to gather at the Golden Nugget Hotel to learn about the latest technologically advanced resources available to them, as well as ways to help strengthen and support one another.

“Health Net is committed to helping improve the lives of blinded and visually impaired Veterans,” said Steve Tough, president of Health Net’s Government and Specialty division, which includes Health Net Federal Services. “We appreciate the opportunity to once again support Operation Peer Support and help Veterans live and work independently.”

OPS is a program that helps recently combat-blinded Veterans attend BVA’s national convention. Now in its sixth year, BVA’s Operation Peer Support initiative will host 17 blinded service members and their families at the convention. The group will include three men from St. Dunstan’s BVA sister organization in the United Kingdom. The chief aim of OPS is for these Veterans to meet and gain strength from BVA’s longtime members at the convention. Several of these Veterans will be sponsored directly by Health Net’s contributions.

Eric K. Shinseki, secretary of the Department of Veterans Affairs, and Gregory L. Goodrich, Ph.D., supervisory research psychologist at the Department of Veterans Affairs’ Western Blind Rehabilitation Center, will serve as keynote speakers. In addition, a high-tech exhibition will showcase technology that improves the quality of life for blinded and visually impaired Veterans. The keynote speeches and exhibition are open to the media and the public. For more information about the BVA convention, go to http://www.bva.org/convention/index.html.
