New Mushroom Based Topical Skin Lightening Products Offered by The Maas Clinic in San Francisco
The Maas Clinic is the first aesthetic medical practice in San Francisco to offer new elure™ Advanced Skin Lightening Technology. elure is the first and only topical skin lightening product that works by directly reducing melanin, the molecule that accumulates in the skin to cause a darkened and uneven appearance. This novel product can deliver meaningful improvement in the appearance of skin tone, evenness and radiance in one month. More than this, elure brightens the appearance of the skin without the commonly reported side effects of traditional skin lightening products, such as skin irritation.
“We are very pleased to be the city’s first practice to offer elure to our patients,” said board-certified facial plastic surgeon and founder of The Maas Clinic, Corey S. Maas, M.D., F.A.C.S. “The safety and tolerability of elure is remarkable. It can be used at many times the normal dose with no potential for side effects. And there were no concerns about tolerability with twice daily usage in 4 separate clinical trials.”
The organically based enzyme that provides these results with elure was developed after almost 30 years of research. Lignin peroxidase, the natural enzyme contained in elure, is derived from a mushroom called Phanerochaete chrysosporium that grows on trees. First documented in 1984, this enzyme has been the subject of over 600 scientific publications.
However, until early in the previous decade, most scientists were investigating this enzyme for the purpose of lightening wood pulp for the more environmentally friendly production of paper. Not until early in the previous decade when a small Israeli biotech company named Rakuto Bio-technology made the observation that lignin and melanin had similar physical properties, did the development of lignin peroxidase as a unique skin-lightening ingredient begin.
Now, elure joins the list of other successful medical aesthetic products (Rogaine, Retin-A, BOTOX, Latisse) that began with a focus in one scientific community only to migrate into an entirely different use.
A patient of Dr. Maas was one of the first people in the Bay Area to experience the benefits of the skin lightening product. “After only a few weeks, the results were remarkable,” she said. “I could see an obvious difference in the fairness and evenness of my skin. And I must say I was quite satisfied with how it felt on my skin…very gentle overall.”
