Contaminated Alcohol Wipes Blamed for Child’s Death

Earlier this month, MSNBC.com reported about the death of a 2 year old Houston boy that died of an infection that has been blamed on contaminated alcohol wipes. The infection, caused by a rare type of bacteria, is the same organism that caused a recent recall of tens of millions of pads and swabs.

Since that report became public, dozens of additional people have come forward to report that they may also have become sick from contaminated products. The same report states that documents from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) showed that government inspectors knew of issues regarding contamination and sterilization at the plant that produced the suspect pads and swabs.

The bacteria causing all the problems, Bacillus cereus, has been linked to everything from superficial skin infections to serious complication from the recent outbreak. According to the article, none of the new infections have been confirmed yet, but lawsuits have been filed by a number of people, including one from a man in Tennessee for $30 million. The products were sold in the United States, Canada and Europe and have since been recalled.
