Dallas Law Firm Offers Assistance with Newly Implemented DPS Amnesty Program

DALLAS, Texas – The Beltz Law Firm, a Dallas-based law firm specializing in criminal defense, personal injuries and traffic ticket citations, has announced its recommendations on how to properly handle the newly implemented amnesty program, which was passed into law last November. The relief program, which was recently implemented by The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS), applies to those with past-due surcharges related to outstanding traffic citations.

“We’re seeing a big response to this amnesty program,” said Jeffrey Beltz, founder of The Beltz Law Firm.

“Unfortunately, there’s also a lot of confusion and misinformation circulating and we want to be able to share our knowledge with Texas residents on how they can fully take advantage of this program,” he added.

The DPS Amnesty Program was implemented due to a flood of complaints about the surcharge system and its inability to collect assessed fees and make driving safer in the state of Texas. Based on reports, many complained that the surcharge system unfairly affected drivers, particularly the indigent.

Under the new law, drivers are eligible for relief if their surcharges were assessed between September of 2004 and December of 2008. Those who have surcharges starting in January 2009 will not benefit.

“The December 2008 date cut off is a big issue and leaves many Texans with a sense of unfairly being left out,” noted Beltz. “In my opinion, this whole program was enacted as a way for legislators to write off some bad debt that was never going to be collected anyway. This system will allow them to save face by showing they’re able to collect at least some money from a flawed and broken system.”

In many instances drivers seeking relief are learning of license suspensions or outstanding traffic-related warrants, which help further complicate matters.
