Dangers from Chlordane Pesticides Still a Threat

The indoor environmental quality (IEQ) professionals at Clark Seif Clark (CSC) provide inspection and testing services for chlordane and other dangerous pesticides.

The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) banned all uses of chlordane in 1983 except when being used for termite control purposes. It was banned by the EPA for all applications in 1988 because of health and environmental concerns.

Between 1948 and 1988 the pesticide was used extensively across much of the country, including the California and Arizona. Because of its slow degradation, its presence in and around many types of buildings that were treated to eliminate or prevent termite damage is still of great concern.

Chlordane lasts for years in the environment and bio-accumulates in all types of animals, including humans. Exposure to chlordane and its metabolites has been associated with testicular, prostate, breast, brain and blood cancers. Other health effects include migraines, respiratory infections, diabetes and depression. It has been found to be one of the most potent carcinogens tested in laboratory animal experiments.

Clark Seif Clark, a leading provider of environmental testing services, has extensive experience investigating to the presence of chlordane and other pesticides. “Even though chlordane was banned decades ago, its presence can still present potential exposure concerns today,” reported Derrick A. Denis, V.P. Indoor Environmental Quality at CSC. “Chlordane is still being found in samples collected from homes and businesses. According to some reports as many as 30 million homes in the United States were treated with chlordane before its ban went into effect. This translates into the potential exposure of millions of Americans to chlordane and its cancer causing properties. Testing can help determine if there is a risk of exposure.”
