University of California Dorm Mold Concerns

LA Testing offers indoor air quality (IAQ) testing solutions to help identify microbial contaminants and prevent health problems.

Pasadena, CA

Earlier this summer KCRA reported that the Northern California Carpenters Union brought to light concerns about framing at a new dormitory at the University of California, Davis. They claimed that mold contaminated wood was used for the framing. According to the news report the university responded by hiring an independent third party environmental professional who performed testing. The tests identified mold and the university says it was then properly treated. The union reported that they are still concerned about additional mold in wall cavities.

The use of wet building materials or materials that have existing mold growth on them prior to construction is a concern for builders, property owners and tenants. When mold contaminated materials are used in construction they can aerosolize and affect those people in the building. Microbial contamination should be properly remediated by professionals who understand how to fix mold problems and not cross contaminate other parts of the building.

Mold in indoor environments can cause a host of medical conditions ranging from allergies to infections. Fungal infections are typically caused by inhaling airborne fungal spores. People with undeveloped or weakened immune systems are generally the most susceptible to these infections. Allergies can also be caused by exposure to mold. Symptoms may include watery eyes, congestion, itchy nose, sneezing, coughing and rashes. Mold is also a known trigger for asthma.

LA Testing, an affiliate of EMSL Analytical and a leading indoor air quality testing laboratory, provides analytical services and testing supplies to help identify building materials that already have microbial contamination. “It’s important to prevent the use of contaminated building materials during any construction project,” reported Ben Sublasky, National Director of Client Services for LA Testing and EMSL Analytical. “Even mold on studs behind the walls can aerosolize and make their way into a room. Simple testing procedures can help identify these materials.”
