Chromosomal Laboratories Purchases Second Eppendorf epMotion 5075 TMX Robotic Workstation to keep up with the Demand for Forensic DNA Testing

While the country has been plagued with slow economic growth, sluggish consumer spending and weak retail sales, one unfortunate area that continues to thrive is crime. According to statistics through the National Institute of Justice’s DNA Initiative, “at the end of 2004, the FBI’s Combined DNA Index System (CODIS) contained just over 2 million offender profiles. At the end of June 2009, CODIS contained more than 7 million offender profiles.”

“There is a massive backlog of samples in government laboratories all across the United States”, stated Nicole Bolin, President of Chromosomal Laboratories, Inc. “Through the DNA Initiative, funding has been made available which allows the government laboratories to outsource some of this backlog to private laboratories, like Chromosomal Laboratories”.

To help process this backlog in a timely manner with the utmost concern for quality, Chromosomal Laboratories has purchased a second Eppendorf epMotion 5075 TMX automated workstation. “With a second robot on board, we have the ability to process upwards of 800 forensic DNA samples per day” stated Nicole Bolin. “This second robotic workstation decreases the amount of hands-on time required by Forensic DNA Analysts which allows them more time to spend on data interpretation and analysis. The Eppendorf epMotion 5075 TMX is a versatile modular system for the automation of DNA extraction, real time PCR and PCR plate set-up. The system allows for computer based integration of an orbital shaker for heating and cooling of samples, a gripper arm for loading and unloading PCR and deep well plates, and offers multi-channel and single channel pipette configurations.
