Retired Teacher Wows International Crowd Through Children’s Book

From August 24 to 28, 2016, the Beijing International Book Fair was held at the China International Exhibition Center.  Among the books that were featured in the fair was Mariam Melkonian’s The Clock.

In her book, Mariam Melkonian tells the story of twins Stella and Stephan. The twins seem almost perfect: they’re kind, good-looking, and intelligent. But there’s a problem—they can never wake up in time for school. Their parents try to help them, but nothing seems to work, so the twins leave school and find a job. Along the way, they realize they are not happy, and they begin their quest for happiness.

Mariam was inspired by her grandson, Avetis Chekmeyan, to write stories. Her first published work was The Clock, which she considers as a collaboration between her and her grandchildren. The book was translated to English by her granddaughter, Mariam Chekmeyan, who studies pre-med at Boston University.

About the Author

Mariam Devine Melkonian was born in Yerevan, Armenia. Inspired by American and Soviet poets, she started writing her own poems at the age of eight, and has written a collection of fifty poems. She came to the US in 1995 and studied computer programming before getting certified as a dental assistant. She has three children and seven grandchildren. She and her husband currently live in the suburbs of Boston.
