BEIJING – 10 July 2006 – The Third Motorola China Technology Symposium has showcased a number of game-changing R&D achievements in handsets, infrastructure, value-added services as well as energy and manufacturing technologies, developed by Motorola China engineers and its local partners. This is a further testament that Motorola China will play a big part in realizing Seamless Mobility.

During the two-day symposium, held from July 10 to 11 and organized by Motorola China R&D Institute, Motorola has demonstrated state-of-the-art technologies in software, hardware design and simulation, applications, end to end solutions, embedded platforms, human interface, environmental friendly material and advanced testing. The following are few examples of many outstanding technologies developed by Motorola China engineers:

1. Broadband Network Extension technology replaces the wired connection between a base station and a radio network controller. This technology is self-organized for WCDMA HSDPA (High Speed Downlink Packet Access)/HSUPA (High Speed Uplink Packet Access) network, no additional technologies are needed. This technology is particularly useful in places where wiring is difficult, such as islands close to the mainland, disaster-hit areas or sports sites where communications is only needed for the time being.
2. Finger-writing recognition is an innovative technology which won the Asian Innovation Gold Award in September 2005. Mobile phones embedded with this technology allow users to compose text messages and e-mails, be it Chinese or English, by tracing out letters on a special keypad with their finger tips.
3. Motorola Labs is a global leader in environmental R&D and testing of electronics. ECOMOTO uses the latest advances in materials and design innovation to improve the environmental performance of Motorola products. Key goals for the program include reducing the level of regulated substances and increasing the recyclability and reuse of products at end of life. ECOMOTO concept mobile phones are being developed for market research and customer evaluation demonstrate Motorola’s strong commitment to eco-innovation and the environment

“This annual symposium is the Technology show of Motorola China. Researchers and engineers from Motorola and our partners come to show how their innovative technologies can improve our products, user experiences and our life,” said Ruey Bin Kao, president of Motorola (China) Electronics Ltd. “And the best technologies and the best innovators will be awarded for their achievements.”

At the symposium, 66 Motorola innovators have been recognized for patents filed in 2005. Due to the efforts of Motorola leadership and creative employees, Motorola has sets up the leading R&D facility in China among foreign investors. Today, Motorola has 16 R&D centers in six cities and more than 2,500 research staff.

Motorola China has a long history of cooperating with local Chinese research institutes and universities in R&D projects. Through cooperation with local partnerships, Motorola has gained deeper understanding of the China market as well as shared the latest telecommunications technologies with our partners.

An outstanding example is the cooperation between Motorola China and Destinator Technologies (China) Ltd., a leading personal navigation software company. Based on Motorola’s SDK (Software Development Toolkit) and API (Application Programming Interface), Destinator has developed applications that are highly compatible with Motorola mobile phones, using the same interface style and use mode as Motorola’s products, adopting Bluetooth to connect GPS receiver, optimizing programs and algorithms for mobile phone platform as well as SMS navigation and voice reminder.

Mr. Tae Sung Park, general manager of Destinator Technologies (China) Ltd., said: “R&D people from Destinator and Motorola have been working together closely on the project, creating benefits for both parties. In the future, Destinator will tap all the functions of Motorola SDK to introduce new technologies that offers better user experiences to Motorola phone users.”

“In China and elsewhere in the world, Motorola is extending our innovative capabilities beyond our offices so that we can grow together with our partners,” said Ching Chuang, director of Motorola China R&D Institute.

Motorola’s capabilities in innovation are stemmed in its heritage, culture and management. In its 78 years of history, Motorola has invented the first commercial car radio, the first two-way radio, the first cellular phone... These great products and technologies, having changed the way we communicate, are fostered by Motorola’s culture that values innovation. “We celebrate the breakthrough idea” is not just value claim, but a principle all Motorola employees live up to.

Before we celebrate breakthrough ideas, we need to find and develop them. It requires a mechanism to make it happen. This is where Early Stage Accelerator (ESA) comes into play. Found in September 2003, ESA has served as prime commercialization engine for the company. The focus of ESA is to incubate ideas that are disruptive and drive technology maturation.

In three years, ESA has played a significant role in developing the following technologies: wireless security services for carrier and enterprise networks, carbon nanotubes in nano emissive displays, broadband over powerline, iradio, neurfon self-organizing sensors networks.

“ESA is an example of our superb innovation management,” Ruey Bin Kao said. “Innovation and creativity have been embedded seamlessly and deeply in our blood. This is the bedrock of Motorola in the past, at the present and in the future.”
