Hats Off To Azarenka At This Year’s Wimbledon Tennis Championships

WEBWIRE

(23rd June, 2009) - Victoria Azarenka is looking to extend her fine form so far this year into the Wimbledon tennis championships in London (June 22nd - July 5th). The 19 year old Belarussian tennis sensation yesterday secured victory over Severine Beltrame of France which puts her through to a second round challenge against unseeded Romanian Ioana Olaru.

This year has seen Azarenka have the best seasonal return of her short career thus far, winning her first WTA titles in the Brisbane International and the Cellular South Cup in Memphis, Tennessee. She also won her first Tier I title in April this year by comprehensively defeating ten time grand slam winner Serena Williams in the final of the Sony Ericsson Open in Florida. A victory over current world number one Dinara Safina in the BNP Paribas Open in France suggests that the teen has what it takes to defeat the best in the business, and this has been reflected in her meteoric rise up the WTA rankings to her current position at number eight in the world.

Still somewhat of a novice on the grass court, Azarenka’s two previous Wimbledon ladies singles appearances have culminated in a third round exit, and her preparation for this year’s tournament has been hampered after being forced to pull out of the warm up AEGON International in Eastbourne with a hip injury as a precaution to ensure she enters the upcoming grand slam in good health.

Ann Charleton from http://www.extrumsports.com, an Irish based online tennis and golf accessories outlet, remarked “Vika has steadily enhanced her reputation in the tennis world this year with some impressive acheivements, and her number eight seeding in Wimbledon 2009 bears testament to her hard work and natural talent, which could see her go far in the tournament.”

Charleton went on to say “having already defeated the top two seeds in competition this year, Azarenka undoubtedly has the ability and determination to put in a strong challenge for the Wimbledon title.”
