Rolls-Royce wins first order for enhanced performance engine kits

WEBWIRE

Rolls-Royce, the global power systems company, has won its first order for kits which improve the efficiency and environmental performance of its Trent 700 engines.

Cathay Pacific will upgrade 24 of its Trent 700 engines with EP (Enhanced Performance) kits that reduce fuel burn and CO2 emissions.

The selection marks another Trent first for Cathay Pacific – it was the first airline to enter into service with a Trent engine, the Trent 700, in 1995. The upgrades will take place over the next two years, reducing fuel costs and CO2 emissions; the upgrade will see CO2 emissions reduced on each aircraft by more than 720 tonnes per year.

Tony Tyler, Chief Executive, Cathay Pacific, said: “We are committed to reducing the environmental impact of our operations and continuing to be as efficient as possible. This investment will help us towards both targets. We have the longest operational history of Rolls-Royce Trent 700 engines, and this order continues our strong relationship.”

Mark King, Rolls-Royce President – Civil Aerospace said: “The upgrade kits can be fitted during routine shop visits and introduce improved aerodynamic compressors derived from the latest Trent engine technology. This adds further value to an engine which already leads the market in terms of noise, emissions, fuel burn and capability.”

The Trent 700 is the only engine specifically designed for the A330. It has accumulated more than 10 million hours of operating service. The Trent 700 EP kit further reduces engine fuel burn by more than one per cent.
