Sorenson Ranch School Announces- Building Troubled Teenagers Self-Esteem Through Visual Art

WEBWIRE

KOOSHAREM, UT- For 30 years, Sorenson’s Ranch has provided families with quality treatment and school programs for teens.

Visual art classes within the school provide students with the freedom of self-expression, leading them to delve into mediums they have never discovered before. With students ranging in age from 12 to 18, all of them have different skills and a variety of culture. Students that enjoy art are encouraged to use it as a fuel to help themselves with their treatment, as it is confidence they are building through their art. From that point on, the students that enjoy it can also discover new skills in the process. The teacher then encourages them to take everything in small steps, as not to overwhelm them. For beginners and students with previous knowledge, it’s important to compliment on the small successes they pull off, and to also instruct them in the basic skills so that the student will feel successful, and the self-esteem will automatically rise.

Some assignments within the curriculum are structured and provide little leeway for the student’s creativity, but most of the assignments provide them with the freedom of self-expression, along with different colors, mediums, and various subjects. Within a classroom setting, a troubled teen can learn from peers around him/her and make their projects better, and when someone else in the class likes a piece of art, the student feels rewarded and important within the class. In the hallway, there are many display cases that teachers use to boost students confidence even more, as their work is being shown off to other teacher, students, and staff.

“Behavior does vary in a school” says Layne Bagley. Overall, the feeling in an art class is calm and enjoyable and the attitudes upbeat and optimistic. The fun part is, whether the students mean to or not, they complete the class having learned something!”
