liff Fiveash and David Foughty Receive Safety Professional of the Year Awards

ANN ARBOR, Mich.-Con-way Freight, a less-than-truckload (LTL) carrier and subsidiary of Con-way Inc. (NYSE: CNW), today announced that two of its safety managers, Cliff Fiveash and David Foughty, have been named Safety Professional of the Year by the Safety Management Councils of the Georgia Motor Truck Association (GMTA) and Pennsylvania Motor Truck Association (PMTA), respectively. The two were honored during separate ceremonies in early May.

Cliff Fiveash received his peer-nominated award from GMTA’s Safety Management Council for his work on behalf of GMTA and as manager of safety for Con-way Freight. Based in Atlanta, Fiveash has been with Con-way Freight for 17 years. In his current role since 2001, he ensures that approximately 400 drivers in eight service centers around the state maintain safe driving skills and remain compliant with Department of Transportation (DOT), Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) regulations. He is a resident of Newnan, Ga.

“This award means a great deal to me and I’m proud of the accomplishments of our drivers and the culture of safety we’ve built at Con-way Freight,” said Fiveash. “The drivers and I work as a team to keep Georgia highways safe and this award is a testament to our hard work and commitment. I’m thankful to GMTA for the recognition and my peers who nominated me.”

David Foughty received PMTA’s Gogolin Safety Award for Safety Professional of the Year for his work on the safety council and as a manager of safety for Con-way Freight, where he is responsible for 600 drivers around the state. The award is named after Edward Gogolin who joined PMTA in 1930 and dedicated the next 40 years of his career to elevating the field of safety in the trucking industry. Based out of the Milton, Pa., service center, Foughty has worked for Con-way Freight for 22 years — 15 of which have been spent in the safety department. He is a resident of Lewisburg, Pa.

“Recognition by PMTA wouldn’t be possible without Con-way Freight’s support of our work with state associations,” said Foughty. “It’s an honor to be recognized by your peers and to work with the extended team at Con-way to keep safety at the forefront of the issues facing the trucking industry. I’m thankful for the opportunity to follow in the footsteps of Ed Gogolin.”

“Safety professionals like Cliff and Dave are role models for all of us at Con-way Freight,” said John G. Labrie, president, Con-way Freight. “With safety as a core value, it is truly special to see them held in such high regard with these prestigious awards. We will continue to support their work and efforts to keep the roadways safe for all of our drivers and the motoring public and commend PMTA and GMTA for taking the time to honor them.”
