Additional computer power fuels analytics and revenue management

MIAMISBURG, Ohio - Xcel Energy (NYSE: XEL) has doubled the size of its Teradata Active Enterprise Data Warehouse (EDW) from Teradata Corporation (NYSE:TDC), the world’s largest company solely focused on data warehousing and enterprise analytics. The expansion supports the energy company’s focus on better revenue management through integrated data and analysis of customer and energy use.

“We are continuing to develop our integrated data environment to deliver cost-savings and business value across Xcel Energy,” said Brian Jore, director of analytics at Xcel Energy. “We’re already using Teradata successfully to monitor various business process controls and increase earnings. We are now completing efforts in minutes and hours that previously took days and weeks. And we’re doing it with less headcount and greater accuracy.”

Following its initial purchase of a Teradata Active EDW in mid 2008, Xcel Energy integrated data from billing, meter reading, meter inventory and other systems, replacing a stove-piped view of its business with an enterprise view with integrated data.

The current purchase will enable Xcel Energy to load data, both daily and in near-real time, from several new data sources including supply chain data. The additional data sources will allow the company to expand its business intelligence focus for more efficient business operations and analysis. Key to gaining value from the additional projects will be the use of a customized logical data model for the utility industry that maps requirements for information and includes specific meter-to-cash business modeling components.

“By analyzing its business, from energy consumption to payment patterns, Xcel Energy is able to improve its meter-to-cash revenue cycle. Xcel Energy continues to mine its active data to discover new cost-effective means of operating its business,” said David Grant, vice president of global industry solutions, Teradata Corporation.

Xcel Energy is one of the largest investor-owned utilities in the United States, providing energy-related products and services to 3.3 million electricity customers and 1.8 million natural gas customers in eight Midwestern and Western states. Through the widely acclaimed SmartGridCity ™ project, Xcel Energy is helping to shape the digital future of the utility industry.
