GLUTEX Sanitizers from Dow Microbial Control for Use Against H1N1 Virus

WEBWIRE

Buffalo Grove, IL - The recent reported cases of “swine influenza” have been identified as a new Influenza Type A strain of H1N1 , combining genetic material from avian, swine and human influenza*.

Influenza A viruses change frequently, and proprietary formulated GLUTEX Sanitizers have been proven efficacious against other Influenza Type A Viruses such as Avian Influenza Virus strain H6N2 and the Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HAPI) strain H5N1.

“Our GLUTEX Sanitizers have proven efficacy, with independent research data showing positive results against major swine, poultry and animal viruses, including Avian Influenza (H5N1/H6N2) and PRRS,” said Nanette Hermsen, global marketing manager, Dow Microbial Control. “Control of deadly diseases starts with establishing a comprehensive biosecurity program. GLUTEX Sanitizers with their proven broad efficacy against bacteria, viruses and fungi, are an important part of a comprehensive biosecurity program, by controlling microbial contamination in different environments.”

As announced by the EPA on May 4, 2009:

“EPA believes, based on available scientific information, that the currently registered influenza A virus products will be effective against the 2009-H1N1 flu strain and other influenza A virus strains on hard, non-porous surfaces. For safe and effective use of these products, always follow label instructions for these products, paying special attention to the product’s dilution rate (if applicable) and contact time.” (http://www.epa.gov/oppad001/influenza-disinfectants.html )

In alignment with the EPA release, GLUTEX Sanitizers contain the highly effective microbiocide glutaraldehyde that prevents cross contamination and controls vegetative pathogens. GLUTEX products have been proven effective against more than 15 other avian and swine viruses including SARS-Associated Coronavirus, Porcine Circovirus (PCV), Porcine Reproductive Respiratory Syndrome (PRRS), H5N1/H6N2, Newcastle Disease, Marek’s Disease, and Hog Cholera. Dow Microbial Control is working with independent microbiological testing facilities to produce efficacy data for GLUTEX products against the H1N1 strain of Influenza. For detailed instructions on the use of GLUTEX products, including use by spraying or fogging, consult the product label and technical information.

Glutaraldehyde has also been identified by the World Health Organization (WHO), as an effective sanitizer against the Avian Influenza virus. Glutaraldehyde-based GLUTEX products are also registered with the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for a broad range of sanitizing applications such as Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, fungi and a variety of viruses pathogenic to animals.

Glutaraldehyde has a very low corrosion rate, fast speed of kill and broad spectrum performance against harmful organisms, making it the best choice for animal hygiene. In fact based on lab results, the GLUTEX GS2 Sanitizer shows one of the lowest corrosion rates to a variety of commonly-found farm use metals, making it particularly effective for use on industrial equipment and farm vehicles. Glutaraldehyde is one of the few biocides that meets criteria to be called readily biodegradable (OECD 301 A and 306 guidelines).
