Train’s Opening Weekend Ticket Price Perfect for Cost-Saving Staycation

La Veta and Alamosa, Colo. (May 5, 2008) – Remember the good ‘ole days when a buck really meant something? Well, vacationers can find it all again riding across Colorado’s San Luis Valley on the Rio Grande Scenic Railroad.

Kicking off the 2009 season over Memorial Day Weekend, May 23 - 25, the train is offering a special daily ticket price that harkens back to 1878, the year the train’s route to La Veta, Colo. was first established.

Throughout opening weekend, roundtrip tickets are just $18.78 per person. Passengers can board the train in either La Veta or Alamosa.

“Our new 1878 promotion is really exciting,” said John Thomas, VP of sales and marketing for the train. “Sure it gives a nod to our historical significance, but more importantly, it allows consumers along Colorado’s Front Range a great ‘staycation’ vacation experience—a real opportunity to get away and enjoy themselves for the day without breaking the bank.”

Opening day festivities in both La Veta and Alamosa will include an official send off, complete with dignitary remarks, champagne christening and a ribbon cutting ceremony.

Visitors can board the Rio Grande Scenic Railroad at the train’s location in the quaint mountain town of La Veta, just 16 miles from Interstate 25 and only minutes from Walsenburg. The train is easily accessible from Colorado Springs (2 hours) and Denver (3.5 hours). The depot is less than one hour from Pueblo, Trinidad or various points in northern New Mexico.

Passengers can also board the train in Alamosa, near the Great Sand Dunes National Park, a popular vacation destination during the Memorial Day Weekend.

The Rio Grande Scenic Railroad features dome cars with comfortable seating and panoramic views of area wildlife, sweeping mountain meadows, towering peaks and deep canyons. In addition, the standard-gauge train is pulled by steam and diesel-powered engines, and includes a 1930s-era open-air observation car and fully-restored 1950s-era Pullman Passenger coaches.

The $18.78 ticket price is good for adults, seniors or children and is available on a first-come, first-served basis. Other restrictions do apply. To purchase tickets, visit www.riograndescenicrailroad.com or call 877-726-RAIL.
