Motorola’s DOCSIS® 3.0 channel bonding technology and high-density downstream solution enable LG Powercom to offer new IPTV and high-speed Internet access services

SEOUL, Korea - Motorola, Inc. (NYSE: MOT) announced today that LG Powercom has selected Motorola’s DOCSIS® 3.0 channel bonding technology for the deployment of the operator’s first DOCSIS® 3.0 certified cable modems, capable of delivering up to 160 Mbps throughput to customers. Motorola will provide its DOCSIS 3.0 bronze qualified BSR 64000 Integrated Cable Modem Termination System (I-CMTS)/Edge Routing platform, which includes the industry’s highest density integrated downstream capability. Motorola’s BSR 64000 TX32 Decoupled Downstream Module delivers greater bandwidth capacity at lower costs. The deployment was completed in March 2009.

LG Powercom is one of the leading telecom operators in Korea offering IPTV and high-speed Internet data services via optical cable and HFC infrastructure. The operator has built more than 57,000km of HFC networks nationwide in Korea. LG Powercom plans to launch IPTV services to cable modem customers together with 100 Mbps Internet access services in April, 2009.

“LG Powercom aims to become an excellent communications company with an unmatchable network capacity supported by the latest technologies,” said Inho Suh, head of technology, LG Powercom. “By implementing Motorola’s I-CMTS solution, we can utilize our HFC network investment to offer new tiered ultra-broadband services, providing customers with access to high-quality communications services at a competitive price that will help create a knowledge-based society in Korea.”

Besides enabling truly personalized media experiences for LG Powercom’s subscribers, Motorola’s I-CMTS solution is also compatible with existing infrastructure including DOCSIS 1.x, 2.0 cable modems. Moreover, operators can expand system capacity by adding multiple TX32 downstream modules and in the future, RX series upstream modules, to offer additional scalability and flexibility to meet rapidly growing customer demand for ultra-broadband Internet services.

“With one of the highest levels of broadband penetration, Korea is among the most advanced broadband markets in the world,” said Drina Yue, vice president, regional management, Home & Networks Mobility, Motorola Asia Pacific. “Motorola is very pleased to support LG Powercom’s launch of next generation, ultra-broadband services to their subscribers. Motorola’s I-CMTS and high-density TX32 solutions are reliable and optimized for rapid network deployment. The solutions significantly reduce cost per downstream channel, enabling operators to offer tiered broadband services cost effectively.”

Motorola is a leading provider of cable broadband technology with a proven track record and extensive experience in implementing advanced networks worldwide. The company recently announced worldwide shipments of more than 1,000 TX32 Decoupled Downstream Modules. According to Infonetics, Motorola continues to lead in the DOCSIS 3.0 certified CPE market with a 70 percent market share in 2008. Motorola also deploys and services I-CMTS-enabled DOCSIS 3.0 networks for key operators in Asia, including C&M, CJ and Qrix in Korea; J:COM in Japan; StarHub in Singapore; and Taiwan Broadband Communications in Taiwan. The deployments demonstrate Motorola’s capabilities with state-of-the-art communications technologies in the region.
