Annual Survey Ranks Corporate Responsibility Performance of Major U.S. Companies

General Mills was named to Corporate Responsibility Officer (CRO) magazine’s list of the “100 Best Corporate Citizens” for 2009. General Mills ranks second in the 10th annual ranking of corporate responsibility performance of major U.S. companies by CRO magazine.

“We’re thrilled to be recognized by CRO magazine for our strong commitment to corporate social responsibility and to be named one of the 100 Best Corporate Citizens for 2009,” said Ken Powell, chairman and CEO of General Mills. “This recognition of our efforts and our commitment to corporate social responsibility is really meaningful, and very rewarding. Every day, General Mills strives to live our mission of Nourishing Lives through our branded products, in the communities we serve, and in the way we work to preserve the environment for future generations. For General Mills, corporate social responsibility and corporate citizenship is a way of life.”

First published in 2000 by Business Ethics Magazine, the “100 Best Corporate Citizens” list is based on publically-available information and ranks Russell 1000 companies on their performance in seven key areas: Environment, Climate Change, Human Rights, Philanthropy, Employee Relations, Finance, and Governance.

“In good times, checkbook citizenship can win the day. But in tough times, strong reputations and transparency pack as much punch as a strong balance sheet,” said Jay Whitehead, CRO Magazine publisher.

The top five companies on this year’s list are Bristol Myers-Squibb, General Mills, IBM, Merck, and HP.

The full list of the “100 Best Corporate Citizens” will be published in CRO Magazine’s first issue of 2009, available at www.theCRO.com.
