Aptina’s 8MP, 1/3.2 Inch Image Sensor Delivers High-End Solution with Best-in-Class Image Quality

Aptina, a leading provider of CMOS image sensors to the industry’s most popular, mainstream and high-end mobile phone manufacturers, announced today the launch of the MT9E013 8MP image sensor. Aptina’s newest multi-megapixel sensor was created with the demanding, image-centric mobile market in mind. The exceptional performance of the new 1.4-micron pixel sensor targets the mobile market with its high-end 1/3.2-inch optical format and excellent image quality. The sensor allows mobile phone manufacturers to easily update existing 1/3.2-inch optical format designs, including those manufacturers using Aptina’s 5MP MT9P012, providing increased resolution from 5MP to 8MP in the same size camera module. The new sensor provides high definition video of 720p at 30 fps and 60fps, or 1080p at 30fps with advanced binning techniques supporting the sensor’s high quality image performance. Additionally, the sensor’s 2-lane MIPI®, CCP2 and parallel interfaces provide handset manufacturers with added high speed flexible options. The new 8MP MT9E013 compliments Aptina’s mobile image sensor portfolio which includes best-in-class 2MP, 3MP, 5MP and 8MP solutions.

“The new MT9E013 8MP sensor provides exceptional image quality and performance to manufacturers looking for a high-end mobile image sensor solution,” said Sandor Barna, Vice President of Marketing and General Manager of Consumer Camera Business Unit. “Our mobile image sensor solution portfolio of VGA, 1.3MP, 2MP, 3MP, 5MP and 8MP image sensors has an excellent reputation which continues with our newest 8MP image sensor. We’re proud of the fact that our CMOS image sensors have a reputation for quality and value recognized by every major mobile phone manufacturer in the world.”

Key Features and Improvements
The technology found in the MT9E013 sensor includes the light-gathering advancements being integrated into Aptina’s 1.4-micron pixel process. The improvements to the sensor provide manufacturers with the increased image quality expected of the best-in-class sensor solutions currently integrated into camera centric high-end mobile phones.

Aptina’s new 8MP sensor provides a high image quality while also providing key features manufacturers desire such as HD video output, 2x2 pixel binning with re-sampling for improved video image quality, multiple interfaces including parallel, MIPI® (2-lane) and CCP2, and an on-chip Voice Coil Motor (VCM) driver to reduce the number of external components and assist manufacturers in reducing module size. Additionally, the sensor’s low power circuit design reduces preview power consumption to low levels to help extend the cell phone battery lifetime.

Availability
MT9E013 samples are presently available with mass production scheduled for the end of July 2009.
