End-to-end integrated network solution to enhance signaling, safety and traffic control

Paris — Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris and NYSE: ALU) today announced it has been selected by the Thales/Dimetronic consortium to supply a comprehensive communications network solution for the 440 km-long high-speed railway line linking Madrid and Valencia in Spain.

The Alcatel-Lucent solution will support the signaling and traffic control systems and will bring the enhanced quality of service and reliability, which are fundamental in an environment with stringent safety requirements. The new communications network, which will be operational in the second half of 2010, will be the largest IP/MPLS network ever deployed for high-speed rail transport in Spain.

“High-speed lines require the maximum levels of security and reliability available and the involvement of the most skilled experts in its design, integration and maintenance. The team formed by Alcatel-Lucent and Thales is with no doubt the most qualified to meet the demanding requirements needed for these communications networks.” said Ignacio Rodríguez, General Manager of the Security Solutions and Services, Thales Spain.

“Alcatel-Lucent is committed to support Thales in this strategic IP network transformation project,” said Adolfo Hernández, President of Alcatel-Lucent’s activities in Europe, Middle East and Africa. “High speed rail networks rely upon safety and security, and our optical and IP network transformation experience around the world will provide the needed communications infrastructure to enable effective signaling, safety and traffic control systems for the Valencia to Madrid line in Spain.”

Alcatel-Lucent’s end–to-end solution will be based on its IP/MPLS and optical technologies and will include overall project management, installation and maintenance as well as global integration. The Alcatel-Lucent communications network will also feature a common management system, greatly improving its operation, based on the Netcool Tivoli commercial platform.
