Qualcomm mirasol Display Technology Adopted by G-CORE for Next Generation GPS Golf Range Finder
LAS VEGAS - Qualcomm MEMS Technologies Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Qualcomm Incorporated (Nasdaq: QCOM), and G-CORE Co. Ltd. today announced at International CES that G-CORE will be the first GPS device maker to feature Qualcomm’s MEMS-based mirasol™ display in the G-CORE Mini Caddy, a GPS golf range finder. By incorporating mirasol displays, the G-CORE Mini Caddy will enable golfers to view the range finder in direct sunlight and for extended periods of time. Qualcomm will show a prototype device model at CES booth #30320 in the South Hall of the Las Vegas Convention Center. Other mirasol displays are available for viewing at the CES Innovations 2009 Design and Engineering Showcase #72062 in the Sands Expo and Convention Center.
Weighing less than a golf ball at 36 grams, the G-CORE Mini Caddy is one of the smallest and lightest handheld GPS devices and incorporates a 1.2-inch bichrome mirasol display. The Mini Caddy identifies pre-loaded golf courses using GPS-enabled search modes when in range, giving users a competitive advantage while on the course. The device will provide information on the outline of fairways at the push of a button, including details on overall course conditions and the locations of bunkers and hazards. Users will be able to download map data freely on to the Mini Caddy’s 1GB of internal memory with information on more than 25,000 golf courses worldwide.
“In just over a year, we have expanded our customer portfolio and our markets to include handsets, MP3 players and other portable electronic devices,” said Jim Cathey, vice president of business development for Qualcomm MEMS Technologies. “We are delighted to be working with G-CORE to deliver the first GPS product to include a mirasol display and are confident that golfers worldwide will enjoy the benefits of superior outdoor viewing and long battery life as a direct result of our mirasol display.”
Based on reflective technology, Qualcomm’s mirasol displays use significantly less energy than traditional displays. The display’s nature-based design lends to low power consumption and high reflectivity, offering consumers extended battery life and superior outdoor visibility. The display’s bistable nature allows for near-zero power usage in situations where the display image is unchanged. This allows for more hours of battery life when compared to similar devices using other display technologies.
“The G-CORE Mini Caddy is the perfect private caddy for golfing enthusiasts worldwide,” said Sun Gab Kim, president of G-CORE. “With Qualcomm’s mirasol display, G-CORE Mini Caddy users will finally be able to see their display on the green regardless of the time of day, thus increasing the usability and functionality of the G-CORE Mini Caddy.”

About Qualcomm MEMS Technologies
Qualcomm MEMS Technologies Inc. has developed the industry’s first direct view MEMS display for mobile devices - a true technological innovation that offers low power consumption and superb viewing quality in a wide range of environmental conditions, including bright sunlight. The display works by reflecting light so that specific wavelengths interfere with each other to create color. The phenomenon that makes a butterfly’s wings shimmer is the same principle used in Qualcomm’s mirasol displays. Using advanced MEMS technologies, mirasol displays support Qualcomm’s overall innovation strategy of increasing the capability of mobile devices while minimizing power consumption. Qualcomm MEMS Technologies Inc. is headquartered in San Diego, Calif., with offices in San Jose, Calif. and Hsinchu, Taiwan.
Qualcomm Incorporated (Nasdaq: QCOM) is a leader in developing and delivering innovative digital wireless communications products and services based on CDMA and other advanced technologies.
