Croatian City gets EMEA’s first MOTOMESH™ Duo wireless network

Varaždin, Croatia – Motorola, Inc. (NYSE: MOT) has announced that the company, its local partner Magic Telekom and European distributor AIR are collaborating with the city of Varaždin to develop a municipal wireless broadband network for the benefit of the city’s employees, businesses, residents and visitors.

Debuted in May this year, the project heralds the first deployment of Motorola’s MOTOMESH™ Duo network in Europe, Middle East and Africa. This powerful, dual radio meshed Wi-Fi network enables users to access wireless broadband applications seamlessly across the city and significantly reduces backhaul costs.

The result will be a cost-effective, highly reliable and flexible network that meets all of this popular tourist destination’s public safety, public works and public access needs. In addition to providing high speed Internet access for everyone, the network gives businesses the ability to offer innovative services such as voice over IP (VoIP), video surveillance and location-based services (information and entertainment services accessible via mobile devices).

An important criterion for choosing the wireless network was that the equipment could be installed without any damage to the city’s historic baroque buildings. This was achieved as the MOTOMESH Duo units are compact, weigh less than 2.3 kilograms and can be discretely mounted. It also helped to expedite the deployment as each installation had to be vetted by the city’s historical conservation department.

To date, some 45 units have been installed covering an area of approximately one square kilometre. A number of wireless applications are already being piloted on the network, including remote monitoring of traffic, street lighting and parking using video surveillance technology. Based on anticipated demand for broadband access, an additional 50 MOTOMESH Duo units will be installed during 2009.

According to Stanko Magic, CEO at Magic Telekom, the decision to choose MOTOMESH Duo technology gives Varaždin an affordable, highly reliable and scalable networking solution. Dorel Nasui, President and CEO of AIR, concurs: “It is a real pleasure to see how residents and visitors of Varaždin can wirelessly access broadband applications seamlessly - virtually anytime and anywhere.”

The city also intends to extend broadband internet access to six smaller towns in the area by the end of the year. This will be achieved using Motorola’s Point to Point and Canopy wireless solutions for network extensions and backhaul links.

Ivan Cehok, mayor of Varaždin, said: ”Motorola’s MOTOMESH Duo technology serves our broadband needs today and also gives us the flexibility to use the network for more advanced applications like VoIP and video surveillance in the future. The city of Varaždin is proud to provide visitors, residents and local businesses with such cutting-edge wireless technology.”
