SHARJAH, UAE - Petrofac Limited ,** an international oil and gas facilities service provider, is using a Nortel* [NYSE/TSX: NT ] data solution to enable staff at its Sharjah headquarters to communicate more efficiently with its factories, construction sites and offices around the world. The solution for Petrofac supports IP telephony and advanced multimedia conferencing to facilitate improved communications within the company.

With more than 10,000 employees, Petrofac operates out of four strategically located international centres, in Aberdeen, Scotland; Sharjah, UAE; Woking, UK; and Mumbai, India as well as 20 offices worldwide. Designed and implemented by Nortel and its channel partner, Alpha Data, the Petrofac Sharjah network and data center benefits from a resilient architecture that enables sub-second network recovery should a network failure be detected. This is an important party of the solution, guaranteeing business continuity and communications critical to Petrofac’s business.

The Petrofac deployment is based on Nortel Ethernet Routing Switch 8600 (ERS 8600) at the core. ERS 8600 provides full quality of service (QoS) capabilities as well as non-stop operation through Nortel’s innovative Split Multi-Link Trunking (SMLT) technology which provides always-on availability and ensures connections are not lost. Nortel Ethernet Routing Switch 5520 is used for the server stacks and edge devices providing high-density Gigabit desktop connectivity and Power over Ethernet (PoE) capability.

Nortel WLAN 2300 portfolio for wireless connectivity enable employees to work from any desk or on the move within the building.

Due to the size and complexity of the network, ongoing Network Management represents a very important issue for Petrofac IT team. Identifying any network performance issue before they affect network services allows immediately action. Adding new users according business needs, managing LAN network bandwidth, prioritize traffic streams, and setting network access policies amongst other functionalities are now very easy for Petrofac to manage.
