PALO ALTO, Calif., Jan. 10, 2006, HP has moved up to No. 3 on the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office’s list of the top 10 organizations receiving the most patents in 2005. The list was released today.

HP was awarded 1,797 patents last year and climbed from No. 4 in 2004.

“We’re gratified to see HP’s research efforts recognized with this year’s patent ranking,” said Shane Robison, executive vice president and chief strategy and technology officer, HP. “In the future, we’ll focus on selectively pursuing those patents that best serve the business interests of HP and add the greatest value to our customers.”

HP will also continue to leverage its patent portfolio through an IP licensing strategy first announced in 2003. Since then, HP has quadrupled the value its patent portfolio brings the company by enabling others to take advantage of HP innovation through licensing and related programs.

HP holds approximately 15,000 patents in the United States and 30,000 worldwide.
