Comprehensive Enhancements Will Extend JUNOS to Broad Range of New Applications, Enabling Fast and Flexible Service Deployments and Improved Operational Efficiency

SUNNYVALE, Calif. -- Juniper Networks, Inc. (NASDAQ: JNPR), the leader in high-performance networking, today announced the Intelligent Services Edge, a fully integrated portfolio of new hardware and software features that address business challenges for customers building and expanding high-performance networks. Leveraging the architectural integrity of Juniper’s powerful JUNOS® software and advanced M- and MX-series platforms, the Intelligent Services Edge will enable providers to deliver a comprehensive range of services over a single operating system with maximum scale. The advancements facilitate intelligent convergence at the edge, which drives network monetization by speeding deployment of new services and reducing operational costs and complexity.

As providers continue to rapidly expand their service portfolios, the ability to converge services across a set of intelligent edge routing platforms will greatly enhance scale, performance and operational efficiency. Juniper continues to address customers’ technical and business challenges with the Intelligent Services Edge, which leverages a single, consistent operating system and high-performance hardware to flexibly deliver many service types—including broadband routing, voice, multimedia and integrated security, as well as application-level awareness. Service providers and enterprises will be able to use these new enhancements to fuel revenue growth and operational efficiencies.

“As one of the world’s leading telecommunications companies, Deutsche Telekom is always looking for innovations that help us monetize our network by enabling the delivery of fast and flexible services while improving operational efficiency and service quality,” said Wolfgang Schmitz, senior vice president, Deutsche Telekom. "We are pleased to see Juniper enhance its portfolio with today’s Intelligent Services Edge announcement, which can deliver a portfolio of integrated hardware and software features that enable intelligent convergence at the network edge.

“We are pleased with the new edge enhancements from Juniper Networks,” said Saverio Orlando, executive director of Network Department, Telecom Italia. "The Intelligent Services Edge further demonstrates that the vision and strategy of Telecom Italia and Juniper are aligned. This is another step that will allow us to reduce the costs of building and scaling our network infrastructure, while concurrently enhancing service delivery and network flexibility.
The Intelligent Services Edge—Extending the Power of JUNOS

JUNOS software is the trusted network operating system fueling Juniper’s leadership in high-performance networking and is the industry’s only network operating system delivering the Power of One: one software release train, one modular architecture and one operating system across multiple routing, switching and security platforms. With today’s announcement, Juniper will further enhance JUNOS to address a wide range of edge services, establishing the Intelligent Services Edge as one of the industry’s most versatile service delivery portfolios.

The Intelligent Services Edge will extend the power of JUNOS by adding the following advanced edge services:

* Broadband Services Routing: extends subscriber management technology from the market-leading E-series Broadband Services Routers to the M- and MX-series platforms
* Dynamic Application Awareness: leverages Juniper’s leadership in security and policy management to provide stateful, subscriber-aware application monitoring, enabling advanced, application-specific service levels and QoS treatments
* Intrusion Prevention: provides application layer security leveraging Juniper Networks advanced Intrusion Detection and Prevention (IDP) technology
* Session Border Control functionality: manages VoIP and multimedia sessions to ensure quality of service and security for VoIP and multimedia applications

These integrated features will greatly simplify the network edge for service providers by reducing the number of network elements and operating systems within the network. This simplification creates an environment where services can be implemented more rapidly since integration among network devices and with back office systems is minimized. Additionally, by decreasing the need for service-specific appliances, the Intelligent Services Edge can reduce power, space and cooling requirements.

“The dynamic evolution of interactive and multimedia Web applications is driving further broadband deployments, both in fixed networks as well as mobile,” said Ed Chang, head of IP Connectivity Business Line, Nokia Siemens Networks. "As a leading global enabler of communications services, we are confident that Juniper’s Intelligence Service Edge portfolio will enable our service provider customers to deliver new, exciting and profitable services to consumers with reduced operational expenditure.
Delivering Next-Generation Hardware for Maximum Performance and Scale

To ensure investment protection of its edge routing portfolio and provide the performance and scale necessary to support advanced applications, Juniper is also delivering a range of new hardware for its M- and MX-series portfolio as part of the Intelligent Services Edge. The new hardware improves the performance, scalability and efficiency of these widely deployed platforms, and can be added non-disruptively to existing systems.

For the MX-series Ethernet Services Routers, Juniper is introducing the MultiServices DPC, a high performance, purpose-built processing engine that will enable customers to run the new JUNOS services announced today without impacting the routers’ forwarding performance. The MultiServices DPC will provide a flexible and dedicated services engine that drives revenue by enabling the rapid deployment of new revenue generating services, and ensures consistent, high performance for these advanced services. With the MultiServices DPC, customers will also be able to deploy security features such as stateful firewall, NAT and IPSec directly on the MX-series router, as well as routing and switching capabilities.

In addition to powering the new JUNOS services listed above, the MultiServices DPC can also host innovative applications developed by customers and partners through Juniper’s Open IP Solution Development Program (OSDP). Through the OSDP, Juniper Networks provides access to the Partner Solution Development Platform (PSDP) that enables customers and partners to develop specialized applications on its best-in-class JUNOS software. The PSDP continues to grow with new partners and customers developing innovative applications, such as the video monitoring application under development by Triveni Digital announced separately today.

The MX-series will also be enhanced with the addition of a new Flexible PIC Concentrator that provides packet over SONET capabilities, leveraging the same OC-48 and OC-192 Physical Interface Cards (PICs) used for M- and T-series platforms. This will enable providers to use the MX-series to connect to traditional, non-Ethernet-based networks for the first time, providing maximum investment protection and reducing sparing costs by leveraging M- and T-series PICs.

Juniper will also enhance the scale and performance of its M-series multiservice routers by extending next generation packet processing hardware to its M7i and M10i systems. Available on a new forwarding engine board, which can be purchased separately and added non-disruptively to existing chassis, the new hardware will enable customers to leverage existing investments to keep costs at a minimum. With the upgraded processing board, the M7i and M10i can deliver up to 68 percent more capacity, while using 57 percent less power per Gigabit, when compared with competitively sized systems.

“JUNOS has long been a key differentiator for Juniper, and with the Intelligent Services Edge, we are further extending our leadership by leveraging JUNOS as the foundation for many more advanced edge services such as application awareness, broadband routing, security, voice and multimedia,” said Manoj Leelanivas, senior vice president and general manager of the Edge and Aggregation Business Unit, Juniper Networks. “Our customers will continue to benefit from the operational efficiency and simplicity of a single network operating system in additional parts of their network and, together with the Partner Solution Development Platform, can create and deploy a virtually limitless number of services on JUNOS. This will enable service providers to monetize their networks by improving service flexibility and velocity, while also delivering maximum scale to meet increasing demand for new services.”
