Paris, September 1, 2008 - Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext: Paris and NYSE: ALU) today announced that it will provide a new Local Area Network (LAN) solution to the Ministry of Education in Turkey. Under the Ministry’s management, the advanced network will offer improved data services to more than 7,500 users in the main Ministry building and in more than 10 offices across the country.

Working with business partner MERİT, who provided installation support and ongoing service support, the Alcatel-Lucent network will enable secure access to the main network from any location via a virtual LAN. This deployment is considered to be one of the largest 802.1x application deployments in the Turkish market.

The system supports real-time applications like voice and video with enhanced multicast support. The new network brought more ports and greater speeds to the network, along with support for 802.1x features. IEEE 802.1X is an IEEE Standard for port-based Network Access Control, it is part of the IEEE 802.1 group of networking protocols which provides an authentication mechanism to devices wishing to attach to a LAN port, delivering greater security and bandwidth for new applications. Additionally, the newly installed systems offer native hardware based IPV6 support for network compliance and features.

“The Alcatel-Lucent network switches bring us high quality data services throughout our operations with results that are seen in a decrease in the time needed to communicate, so employees can manage their time and maximise their efficiency. This ensures superior performance along with the ability to integrate applications like video access to all on the network, large file transfers,” said Mehmet Altinsoy, Assistant General Manager from the Ministry of Education. “Additionally, we now can offer our employees access from anywhere through the virtual LAN which is of great importance to the staff and administrators in improving productivity and in providing access to shared information.”

“802.1x VLAN is becoming more important for public and private segment customers for security reasons,” said Oset Hoskan, Manager Strategy, Solutions and Marketing at Alcatel-Lucent. “In addition, users want more bandwidth within their network due to new applications that are offered on the network. Alcatel-Lucent OmniSwitch products bring that assurance and future proof investment to help enterprises transform to a dynamic communications model that strengthens relationships with customers, simplifies interaction, and improves performance, while also offering the lowest power consumption helping limit operational costs.”
