Procter and Gamble Selects IBM Internet Security Systems to Help Amplify Its Threat Protection, Simplify Its Security Operations and Save on Administrative Costs

ARMONK, NY - IBM (NYSE: IBM) today announced that Procter and Gamble (NYSE: PG) has selected products and services from IBM’s Internet Security Systems (ISS) division to expand its global cyber-security initiative. The agreement will strengthen Procter and Gamble’s (P&G) threat protection arsenal by streamlining the management of its layered security tools and ultimately can help deliver substantial savings in administrative costs.

This simplified security approach will streamline the management and help increase the efficiency of P&G’s cyber-security project. First developed in 2005, P&G pioneered a layered, preventative network protection and vulnerability assessment project to mitigate and eliminate major costly internal vulnerabilities. Because the threat landscape has drastically evolved since the project was developed to become more sophisticated and profit-driven, P&G will look to IBM to enhance its security tools and provide on-going management of its security infrastructure with IBM ISS managed security services. P&G will benefit from IBM ISS’s industry leading security products and managed security services that are based on IBM ISS’s experience and its leading X-Force research team while also helping P&G save on administrative and IT resources costs associated with managing its security operations.

As part of the agreement, IBM will help manage the efficiency of P&G’s network security through its leading Virtual Security Operations Center (SOC). The Virtual SOC can help enhance the overall security posture of the company by integrating data from disparate, heterogeneous security products into a single point of control. This feature allows IBM ISS to view, manage and monitor P&G’s global security infrastructure through a powerful Web-based portal that provides integrated vulnerability assessment, data correlation and analysis. IBM ISS can quickly visualize and prioritize security areas that need remediation. Through the Virtual SOC, IBM ISS streamlines the monitoring and maintenance of four IBM ISS Proventia SiteProtector management consoles deployed throughout North America, Europe and Asia, alleviating the need for P&G to conduct manual updates.

“By teaming with IBM ISS our objective is to both strengthen our security systems and improve the efficiency and effectiveness of our security operations,” said Willie Alvarado, P&G’s Enterprise Infrastructure Services Director. “Working with IBM we believe we can deliver substantial cost savings and offer the business a security solution that is both strong and sustainable.”

“P&G is truly ahead of the curve with a radical approach to pre-emptive security,” said Val Rahmani, general manager of IBM ISS. “Working together we’ve enhanced the security infrastructure and resiliency around the globe, and we’re helping to reduce the cost of that security. With a layered, streamlined and managed security strategy in place, P&G can focus on its core business, and ultimately better serve its customers.”

IBM will deploy for P&G a comprehensive set of integrated security technologies which proactively identify and address vulnerabilities at the desktop, server and network tiers.
