BASF expands range of binders for wood coatings

* New products and applications are the result of intensive research and development on exterior wood coatings and window coatings

Ludwigshafen, Germany – BASF is launching with immediate effect a series of new products and applications for outdoor wood coatings in the acrylic dispersions segment: Acronal® DS 6276X and Acronal® DS 6277X ensure superior weather durability and advanced blocking resistance of the coatings they are used in. In addition, they defoam well and can be easily and cost-effectively formulated using conventional rheology modifiers. BASF has considerably expanded the application spectrum of Acronal® A 508, AQAGloss® and COL.9®, which are already on the market.

BASF continuously develops its wood coatings segment. “Thanks to our new, high performance products, our extensive formulation expertise and our applications experience, we help our customers to be more successful”, said Dr. Roland Baumstark from marketing, polymer dispersions for architectural coatings at BASF during a conference in Stresa, Italy. At the conference BASF presented new binders and formulations for wood paints, wood stains and industrial coatings for windows and exterior doors to more than 50 representatives of Europe’s wood coatings community. According to Jan-Peter Sander, Group Vice President and responsible for the Europe-wide architectural coatings business: “With our new products, we are extending our leading position in dispersions for water-based, environmentally friendly coatings. And we are also setting new technological benchmarks in wood paints and coatings.”

Acronal® DS 6276X is an extremely fine-sized, self-crosslinking pure acrylate dispersion for high-quality decorative and industrial wood window and door coatings. The new dispersion leads to excellent blocking and water resistance and thus superior durability of the coating it is used in. Additionally, the binder is wet transparent leading to excellent in can clarity of stains. Acronal® DS 6276X especially meets the requirements of the southern European market.

Acronal® DS 6277X is softer and extremely flexible. Nevertheless it displays good blocking strength. The binder protects pigmented, decorative wood coatings – often used on wooden claddings in Northern Europe – against water penetration. Further to that, it acts as an elastifying component in harder coatings, transparent and pigmented alike. In this way Acronal® DS 6277X helps to prevent weathering-related cracks in the coating.

New applications for Acronal® A 508, AQAGloss® and COL.9®

Another new product now available in our wood coatings portfolio is Acronal® A 508, a binder for primers and impregnations. The product offers a number of unique advantages. According to Dr. Arno Tuchbreiter, from product development: “Primers formulated with Acronal® A 508 lead to pronounced grain enhancement. They improve adhesion induced by easy penetration of the very fine and colloidal stable dispersion particles into the wood. Acronal® A 508 is also highly compatible with fungicides like IPBC.”

AQAGloss®, originally developed for high-gloss paints, can now also be used for wood coatings showing excellent long term weathering results. In the field of water-based coating systems, AQAGloss® is an innovation that offers an alternative to conventional solvent-based architectural coatings. AQAGloss® also introduces new possibilities for processing: it forms a crystal-clear, tack-free film at room temperature, is extremely easy to apply and has a long open time. Other advantages for users: AQAGloss® ensures haze-free, high-gloss surfaces previously only associated with solvent-based alkyd resin coatings.

The COL.9® nanotechnology is now also implemented into BASF’s solutions for wood coatings. New binders based on the COL.9® nanotechnology ensure dirt and blocking resistant wood coatings with excellent water vapor permeability. The first prototype for industrial topcoats for window coatings with outstanding weathering stability will be introduced in 2009. COL.9® is already being successfully used as a binder for dirt resistant and color tone stable architectural coatings.

Binders for architectural coatings have become classic BASF products. They ensure gloss, mechanical stability and the necessary adhesion of the paint to the respective surface. For large-volume applications such as interior paints, facade coatings or outdoor plasters, BASF’s water-based polymer dispersions, for example Acronal® S 790, Acronal 290 D or the solvent-free formulatable Acronal® S 559, have proven their worth for many years. With Acronal® LR 9014, first launched in 2001, BASF also established one of today’s benchmarks for top-quality exterior wood coatings.

As a major supplier of polymers to the coating and construction industry, BASF develops, produces and markets polymer dispersions, powders and solutions based on acrylates, styrene and butadiene worldwide. They are used, for example, to manufacture plasters, finishing systems and compounds, roof coatings and ceramic tile adhesives. They act as binding agents in paints and coatings. BASF’s special strengths are high performance research and development and applications technology. The business is part of the Acrylics & Dispersions division in BASF’s Performance Products segment.
